Benefits of Having a Sump Pump

Typically, sump pumps last about 10 years depending on the amount they are used. That being said, it’s always important to keep an eye on them. If you notice any of the following, it’s time to give our team of CGC’s professional plumbers a call:

  • Pump making strange noises
  • Strange smell
  • Excessive vibrations when it turns on
  • Constant running or irregular cycles
  • Water rising in the pump
  • Visible rust
  • Motor failure

How to Test Your Sump Pump

Perform a brief inspection of the pump itself and its outlet pipe

You can do this by listening closely to the pump. If there is a lot of groundwater around the foundation the pump should turn itself on, pump the water out and turn itself back off again.

Then, remove the cover and look inside the sump pit or crock. If you notice that the water level is low, that means the pump is working properly.
Don’t forget to examine the sump pump and surrounding pit for any signs of external damage. Most importantly, check that the outlet pipe that carries water from the pump to outside your home is free of any blockages.

Make sure all electrical components are in order

The sump pump should be plugged into a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter – this ultimately protects it from a potential short while it is submerged.

Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit

Take a five-gallon bucket and fill it up with water and pour the water slowly around the sump pump. Your pump should kick on once the water level has reached a predetermined level below the basement floor.

If you notice that the pump doesn’t turn on, you need to check if it’s clogged or damaged and call our professional plumbers for help.

Clean and maintain the sump pump

During your annual inspection of the sump pump, don’t forget to check if there’s mud trapped in it – this could ultimately affect the flow of water.
